  • Description and History

Like variable fighters of decades past, the success of the VF-11 Thunderbolt prompted deployment of numerous specialized systems that could enhance the variable fighter for various mission profiles. One such set of augmentative equipment was the development of the "APS-11 Protect Armor Pack." Like the VF-0 Phoenix PWS-0X " Reactive Armor" and the VF-1 Valkyrie GBP-1S "Ground-Combat Protector Weapon System", the "APS-11 Protect Armor Pack" added numerous weapons, thrusters and armor to the battroid mode of the VF-11, all of which could be jettisoned selectively when not required. The new armored system included dozens of micro missiles, four laser cannons and a special large bore gun pod that increased the firepower of the VF-11 significantly. To offset the added weight of the armor system two large boosters are mounted on the back and to provide added defense a large shield was installed of the left arm. These added systems made the APS-11 Protect Armor pack ideal for heavy combat.

During orbit of the planet Rax on September 2045, the Battle 7 came under attack from Gepernitch and his Varauta fleet. VF-11 Armored 05 (piloted by the commander of Diamond Force, Lt. Kinryu) joined in an assault upon Gepernitch's battle fortress, hoping to give the Battle 7 time to fire the main gun. In battle, the "Protect Armor" system proved incredibly robust, repelling several attacks from both enemy gun pod and missile fire while suffering minimal damage. The powerful missile systems of the "APS-11 Protect Armor Pack" proved equally potent offense and Armored 05 destroyed at least half a dozen enemy Fz-109 Elgerzorene mecha with a full missile volley. Lt. Kinryu also utilized the powerful GU-XS-06 long-range high-piercing-round gun pod of the "Protect Armor" VF-11 to punch through the armored hull of a Varauta Vanguard Frigate, fly inside and destroy the ship's reactor. The Varauta vessel then exploded and killed Lt. Kinryu but the explosion temporarlity screened the U.N. Spacy forces from attack. Kinryu's sacrifice allowed the Battle 7 time to fire the main gun and when the blast seriously damaged Gepernitch's battle fortress, the Varauta fleet withdrew.
