Variant VF-1A Valkyrie "Cavaliers"
Debut: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Episode 5
Description: Barely a glimpse is seen of these dark-colored variable fighters stationed aboard the SDF-1 Macross. Fan-made name "Dark Bird" was used until July 27th, 2012 when toy manufacturer Yamato officially designated this variant "Cavaliers". Interestingly, Yamato decided the "Cavaliers" are VF-1A type Valkyries though this appeared impossible to determine from the brief shot seen in the anime. However, odds are the craft is an A-type since that is by far the most mass-produced VF-1 Valkyrie. The dark color of this craft suggests the Cavaliers may be the deep space equivalent of "low-visibility" hulls.
