Space Gandam V

Space Gandam V

Notes

Debut: Space Gundam V (aka Space Gandam V); South Korean animated film, released July 1983
Description: Numerous Macross fans have sent messages and emails to me over the years asking about Space Gundam V (sometimes spelled Space Gandam V), a 1983 South Korean animated film directed by Kim Cheong-gi. The Korean animated film uses an unlicensed version of the VF-1J Valkyrie design from Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1982) and for obvious reasons it has grabbed the attention of many a Macross fan. Clips of the film on YouTube reveal the animated film is more akin to a Super Robot story rather than a Real Robot show for which Macross is known. The VF-1J Valkyrie stands alone as the only notable visual design element in the film. The remainder of the production design is dominated by an uninspired array of cliche science fiction vehicles and villains, from flying saucers to monsters such as a giant rat, a giant spider and a giant, winged demon. The hilariously poor quality animation is also accompanied by re-used sounds from other media, including a notable sound effect taken from the 1981 video game Galaga. While the Space Gandam V appears almost identical to the original Shoji Kawamori Valkyrie design (including 3-mode transformation and the cockpit design), it features a rather garish color scheme likely meant to depict the VF-1J Valkyrie as a super robot. Despite the title, this South Korean animated film is not related to the Mobile Suit Gundam intellectual property owned by Bandai Namco.

Clearly, the Space Gandam V profile shown here is not meant as a serious entry into the Macross mechanical catalog. The Space Gandam V is included here merely to help answer repeated questions from curious (or confused) Macross fans and naturally, for a bit of a laugh.
