Cataloguing Official Trivia Much of the official technical data and trivia for Macross was written not necessarily as world building but to create the impression of scientific realism. The premise of Macross itself (giant transforming robots fighting aliens) is rather outlandish fantasy. One way to suspend audience disbelief is to write and present the military aspects of Macross in as realistic a manner as possible. Since much of the written trivia was written for the purpose of presenting the implausible as plausible, this policy lead to a lot of written trivia that feels piecemeal and disparate. For example, technical guru Masahiro Chiba ascribed realism to the fictional Destroid Defender by writing weapon descriptions that include a muzzle velocity. However, most other Macross mecha lack trivia for muzzle velocity of their weaponry, likely because other technical details were written to enhance the realism in those other profiles. So the best fans can do is read all the trivia to note specific details of interest in a effort to construct an overall impression of that one aspect of the Macross fictional world. Hence this page is not an analysis but rather simply a catalog of all the known trivia describing numbers of ships and vehicles constructed in the Macross universe. These individual pieces of trivia don't add up to a definitive conclusion about the size of fleets and military materiel but they do provide fans with an impression of the vast military forces at play in the Macross stories. |

List of Trivia The VF-1 Valkryie was manufactured from 2006 to 2013, producing 5,459 VF-1 variable fighters (Variable Fighter Master File VF-1 Valkyrie, 2009):
Over 125 Oberth Class Space Destroyers were built and participated in combat against the Zentradi Bodol Zer Main Fleet in February 2010. Official trivia for the VF-4 Lightning III variable fighter describes a total production count of 8,245 fighters produced. Mass production of the VF-4 ceased in 2022. VF-17 Nightmare has a total number of units produced of 718 (Macross Chronicle #29, 7 Mechanic sheet, UN Sheet 7A, Chronicle #19 7 Mechanic sheet, UN Sheet 7C, Chronicle #17 7 Mechanic sheet, UN Sheet 4A). Official trivia from the Macross Chronicle Issue 5 describes the Battle 7 (City 7 or Macross 7) leading the UN Spacy 37th long distance colonization fleet of 194 large ships and 2,689 small craft. Of the small craft, 1,800 are VF-11C Thunderbolt variable fighters. Official trivia for the Northampton Stealth Frigate from Macross Chronicle D24-10 states it is the most numerous ship the UN Spacy has constructed and that 9,000 such ships have been built as of 2045. Production of the class still continues to this day (2059 or 2067, circa Macross Delta). The Varauta Fleet is described (estimated) as 502 large ships and 8,964 small craft. Of the small craft, 7,652 are Fz-109 Elgerzorenes, (Macross Chronicle 2E Worldguide 16A Varauta Forces). Before this information became available, the only figure for the Varauta forces was given in Macross 7 episode 38 in which the Varauta forces around the planet Rax were numbered as 70,000 ships. In Macross 7 Encore Fleet of the Strongest Women, a Meltran Fleet (female Zentradi) encountered the Macross 7 fleet, outnumbering it 500-to-1. At a ratio of 500-to-1, the Meltran fleet is 97,000 warships and 1,344,500 combat vehicles. In Super Dimension Fortress Macross series, the largest fleet ever to appear in a Macross anime, was the Zentradi 118th Bodol Zer Main Fleet. Trivia described the fleet consisted of 7,500,000,000 personnel (approximately) while dialog in the show itself described the fleet as 4,795,122 warships. Official literature for the Fulbtzs-Berrentzs Class Fleet Flagship declares there are some 1,000 to 2,000 ships of this class commanding Zentradi fleets in the Milky Way Galaxy. |
